The Idyllwild Elementary School building addition, located in the San Bernardino National Forest, not only enhances the existing fifty-year old “cabin-like” facility, but greatly serves the local community through shared use. The goal of Hemet Unified School District educators, residents and administrators was to add twenty thousand square feet of additional athletic, academic and educational support space in the center of the campus during the regular school year. The building program is comprised of a new 10,000 square foot multi-use gymnasium/assembly space and 10,000 square foot of academic space containing classrooms, a library, band practice, staff lounge/workroom and a computer lab. The site design incorporated retaining walls, playfield terraces, a mini amphitheater, stairway and ramps, accessibility compliance requirements, sub-grade and on-grade drainage systems.
