The Lillian Slade Aquatic Center at Whittier College was an extraordinarily challenging project. After competing with multiple high level architectural specialty design firms, PJHM Architects was awarded the project because of our creative design solution. A solution to demolish a 30-meter pool located fifteen feet lower than surrounding buildings and parking decks, all while an adjacent gymnasium was in full use. We proudly claim that solving this structurally complex project means that PJHM Architects can achieve anything! Note the efficient placement of equipment and utility rooms below the existing parking deck. The cambered roof entrance structure was part of PJHM’s design solution to create a strong, accessible entrance to the college’s extremely popular gymnasium.
