Carver Elementary School Modernization

Long Beach Unified School District

The modernization of George Washington Carver Elementary School for the Long Beach Unified School District will provide essential upgrades to the 1950s campus. Despite a previous modernization in the late 1980s, much of the Carver campus is in its original form and does not meet the needs for modern learning environments.

The Carver modernization is part of a series of “HVAC Modernizations” that the school district is undertaking in a number of elementary and middle school campuses. However, the modernizations involve much more than simply adding HVAC to schools that did not have such systems. All classrooms are receiving major systems and technology upgrades, buildings are receiving new interior and exterior finishes throughout, and accessibility upgrades are being made across the campus. Some of the buildings are receiving new roofing, and are also receiving seismic structural upgrades. The project also gives the site a new primary playground, as well as a large grass playfield that the school does not currently have.

Once completed, the modernization project at Carver Elementary School will retain the exterior character of a 1950s-era ’neighborhood school’ but with upgrades throughout to provide all of the modern features of a 21st Century school.
